Why JSON: The Advantages of a Universal Data Format

Simple enough to read at a glance

JSON expresses data with plain key-value pairs and is extremely human-readable:

No tags, no redundant markup. Even without programming experience, you can grasp the structure in seconds. It is a "common tongue" that both humans and machines use comfortably.

Cross-language, cross-platform

Almost every programming language supports JSON natively: JavaScript, Python, Java, Go, PHP, C#… Parsing and serializing are usually part of the standard library, with no extra dependencies. That makes JSON the de facto standard for front-end/back-end communication, microservices and third-party APIs.

Parse speed and size

  • Simple grammar means small, fast parsers;
  • Compared with XML, equivalent data is smaller (no repeated tags) and transfers faster;
  • Compressed JSON (gzip/br) is tiny — mobile-friendly.

A mature tool ecosystem

  • Formatters, validators and minifiers are everywhere (e.g., HeronTool's JSON Formatter, JSON Validator and JSON Minify);
  • Every language has ready-made JSON Schema validation, visual editors and tree viewers;
  • The default for config files: package.json, tsconfig, compose files and many more.

Limitations and workarounds

  • No comments: for long config files, switch to JSONC (JSON with comments) or YAML;
  • No binary data: encode binaries as Base64 inside strings;
  • Very large payloads: use streaming JSON / NDJSON, or another format.
