The History of QR Codes: From Car Factories to Every Phone
An invention for "quick response"
The QR code was invented in 1994 by Masahiro Hara, an engineer at the Japanese company Denso Wave. Its origin was humble: Toyota's production lines needed to identify parts quickly, but conventional barcodes held too little data and had to be aligned carefully. Hara's team designed a square matrix code with three "finder" patterns in the corners, so a scanner could locate it instantly from any angle. Because it read far faster than barcodes, they named it "Quick Response."
Out of the factory, into the phone
For its first decade or more, QR codes were mostly used in industry and logistics. The real turning point came around 2010:
- Smartphone ubiquity: built-in cameras and scanning apps introduced QR to everyday users;
- Mobile payments: scan-to-pay brought QR to hundreds of millions of users, especially in China;
- 2020 and the pandemic: health codes, check-in codes and restaurant menus turned "scan it" into a universal habit.
How much can a QR code hold?
- Up to 7,089 numeric characters or 2,953 bytes (about 1.7 KB of binary data);
- Four modes: numeric, alphanumeric, byte and Kanji (Shift JIS);
- Four error-correction levels (L/M/Q/H) — a partially damaged code can still be read;
- Standardized as ISO/IEC 18004.
A notable fact
Inventor Masahiro Hara never enforced patents on the technology — Denso Wave chose to make it freely usable, retaining only the "QR Code" name as a trademark. This openness is a major reason QR codes spread worldwide.
